What types of bottle are protected?

At present there are four protected types of bottle:

  1. "Flûte d'Alsace"
  2. "Bocksbeutel" or "Cantil"
  3. "Clavelin"
  4. "Tokaj"

If a bottle shape is to be included in the list of certain specific types of bottle, it must fulfil the following requirements:

  1. It has been used exclusively, genuinely, and traditionally for wine with a particular protected designation of origin or geographical indication for at least 25 years, and
  2. in the perception of consumers, this use refers to a wine with a particular protected designation of origin or geographical indication.

The conditions for the use of certain specific types of bottle are listed in Annex XVII of Regulation (EC) No 607/2009.
