Product safety and product compliance

Only products manufactured in accordance with European Union product safety regulations may be imported into the European Union. The aim is to protect consumers from unsafe products.
Imports of certain products, such as laser pointers with a power of more than one milliwatt or jamming transmitters, are in principle prohibited. For other products, such as toys or electrical and electronic equipment, certain safety and conformity requirements have to be met.

Products that individuals order directly from non-EU countries through mail order or online trade must also comply with the applicable product safety regulations upon import into the European Union.

If, at the time of import clearance, there is evidence that there has been an infringe-ment of product safety regulations, the customs authority will seek the decision of the competent market surveillance authority. This is the sole authority that decides whether a product may be imported, returned to the sender or whether it even has to be destroyed. The customs authorities must take this decision into account when customs clearance is carried out.
