Textiles
Notwithstanding the principle of the free movement of goods, some provisions have been introduced to protect certain European industries. This is why specific documents that allow the authorities to monitor the trade in these goods must, if applicable, be presented to the competent customs office when certain textiles are imported.
The import of certain textiles from some non-European Union states may require the presentation of an import permit.
The import permit must already have been issued by the competent authority prior to the import of the textiles and be presented together with the textiles to the competent customs office upon entry into Germany - so for example, when travelling, to the competent border customs office.
Textiles may not be imported without the required import permit. Infringements are subject to penalties.
You should, therefore, inform yourself of the relevant provisions in good time prior to your journey.
Exemptions
In certain cases, where for example the quantity of goods or their value is very small, or they are destined for a specified use, an import permit is not required.
Examples of exemptions
- Certain textile products up to a value of 1,500 euros that are brought in by travellers and not intended for sale
- Textile products up to a value of 1,000 euros, insofar as the textiles are not brought in by the traveller (for example, textiles sent on by post) and not intended for sale or other commercial purpose.
