What is the purpose of the obligation to declare or notify?

The purpose of the obligation to declare is to prevent the illegal movement of money across the external borders of the European Union in order to combat money laundering, the financing of terrorist organisations and criminal activities.

Neither the obligation to declare, in writing or orally, nor the relevant inspections by customs are intended to restrict the free movement of capital. You will still be permitted to carry unlimited amounts of cash or equivalent means of payment across borders in the future.
