The purpose of the obligation to declare is to prevent the illegal movement of money across the external borders of the European Union in order to combat money laundering, the financing of terrorist organisations and criminal activities.

The obligation to submit a declaration and the customs inspections are not intended to restrict the free movement of capital in any way. You will continue to be permitted to carry unlimited amounts of cash across borders.
